One quick look at your mouth reveals that there is much more going on in there other than your teeth. When it comes to your oral health, your gums matter just as much as your pearly whites! If too much plaque and bacteria are allowed to build up on the gums due to a lack of oral hygiene, they can actually develop an infection called periodontal disease, which can cause swelling, redness, sensitivity, and eventually tooth loss! Fortunately, our team is able to spot the earliest signs of infection and provide treatments proven to make it disappear in a flash.
If we find any signs of periodontal disease during your regular checkups, we’ll initially treat it using a dental cleaning to remove any harmful bacteria. However, if the infection is more advanced, we’ll need to perform a special cleaning called scaling and root planing.
Scaling will remove the hardened plaque deposits located under the gum line around the roots of the teeth (called calculus), and then root planing will smooth out the rough surfaces of the teeth’s roots to make plaque less likely to gather on them in the future, lowering the risk of reinfection.
Laser periodontics enables our team to target and eliminate the specific bacteria that causes gum disease within the mouth without harming any of the surrounding healthy tissue. Thanks to this precision targeting, laser treatments are not only extremely effective, but quite comfortable as well. Patients experience almost no bleeding, swelling, or pain during or after a procedure. This approach also enables the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth faster compared to more traditional treatments.
